Munich vs Berlin: Which City Is Better for Startups?

Both cities have thriving startup scenes, but they attract very different kinds of founders.

Different strengths

Berlin is Germany's startup capital by volume. More startups are founded there, more venture capital flows through the city, and the ecosystem is larger overall. Berlin excels at consumer tech, marketplaces, and fintech.

Munich's strengths lie elsewhere. The city is a magnet for deep tech, enterprise software, and startups connected to traditional industries like automotive, insurance, and manufacturing.

Talent and universities

Munich has a clear advantage when it comes to technical talent. TUM and LMU produce thousands of engineering and science graduates every year, and the city's high quality of life helps attract international talent.

Berlin draws creative and business-minded talent. Its lower cost of living (though this gap is narrowing) and cultural scene make it attractive to international founders and early-career professionals.

Funding landscape

Berlin has more VC firms and sees more deal volume. Munich is catching up, especially in later-stage funding, partly because of its proximity to large corporates willing to invest in or acquire startups.

For deep tech startups, Munich may actually be the better choice because of specialized investors and public funding programs like EXIST and the Bayern Kapital funds.

The right choice depends on you

If you are building a consumer app or marketplace, Berlin is probably the better fit. If you are working on enterprise software, hardware, or anything connected to engineering and manufacturing, Munich offers stronger infrastructure and networks.

Many founders start in one city and expand to the other as they grow. The two ecosystems are complementary rather than competing.
